What Is Guess Efficiency?

At its core, Wordle Guess Efficiency is a mathematical metric that measures how effectively your chosen word reduced the pool of remaining possible answers, compared against the absolute best move available at that exact moment. It is the ultimate indicator of your Wordle Guess Score.

When you enter a word into the puzzle, you receive colored tile feedback (green, yellow, or gray). Before you even see that feedback, every word in the dictionary has an Expected Value—an average number of candidates it will eliminate across all possible scenarios based on letter distribution and position frequency. The Guess Efficiency Score compares the Expected Value of your guess to the Expected Value of the engine's mathematically optimal guess.

Why does this matter? There is a massive difference between solving the puzzle quickly because you got lucky, and making highly efficient guesses that guarantee long-term consistency. A player who guesses randomly and hits the answer on row two was incredibly lucky, but their Guess Efficiency Score for that move would be abysmal because it was statistically unsound. Conversely, a player who expertly narrows down a difficult board from 1,000 words to 2 words has made an incredibly efficient guess, even if they don't solve it until row four. Information Gain & Entropy

Information Gain, quantified as Entropy (measured in bits), represents the uncertainty your guess removed. The more entropy a guess generates, the more effectively it splits the remaining dictionary into tiny, manageable groups.

Green Accuracy, Yellow Usage, and Gray Letter Waste

The engine harshly penalizes Gray Letter Waste. If you already know that 'T' is gray, but you guess a word containing 'T', you have wasted 20% of your testing capability for that turn. Proper Yellow Usage involves moving known letters to new positions to hunt for green tiles.

Efficiency vs Luck

It is crucial to understand that Efficiency and Luck measure two completely different phenomena in the Wordle universe. Our calculator specifically separates them so you can accurately evaluate your actual skill level without bias.

For example: If you play OUIJA on turn one and it miraculously turns out to be the answer, your Luck Score is maximum (100). However, your Efficiency Score is actually quite low because OUIJA is mathematically a poor opener that tests incredibly rare letters. It was a bad decision that yielded a lucky result.

Hard Mode Analysis

When you toggle Hard Mode inside the calculator, the mathematical engine completely shifts its foundational logic to accommodate the rules.

The Restrictions: Under Hard Mode rules, every guess you make must utilize all previously discovered green and yellow clues in their subsequent configurations. You cannot legally play a word that ignores a known yellow letter.

Efficiency Changes: This vastly restricts your pool of legal moves. The calculator will automatically adjust the baseline "Optimal Guess" to only consider words that are legally playable under these strict rules. Because you cannot play "burner words" to dodge traps in Hard Mode, achieving a high efficiency score relies heavily on picking an opening word that naturally avoids restrictive consonant clusters.
