What Is Wordle Hard Mode?
Wordle Hard Mode is an optional setting in the official NYT Wordle game that adds constraints to your guesses. When enabled, you must adhere to two rules for every guess after the first:
- Green letters must stay in place — if you discover a letter is in the correct position, every subsequent guess must include that letter in that same position.
- Yellow letters must be reused — if a letter is in the word but in the wrong position, every subsequent guess must include that letter somewhere.
In short: you cannot ignore information you've already learned.
Hard Mode Rules in Detail
📋 Hard Mode Rule Summary
| Tile Color | Normal Mode | Hard Mode |
|---|---|---|
| 🟩 Green | No constraint | Must keep letter in same position |
| 🟨 Yellow | No constraint | Must include letter in a different position |
| ⬜ Gray | No constraint | Optional (can still use if it's a duplicate) |
Why Play Hard Mode?
There are several compelling reasons to enable Hard Mode:
- Forces disciplined thinking — you can't waste guesses on "information-only" words
- Emoji bragging rights — Hard Mode solutions display with an asterisk (*) or special marker
- Better practice — constraints sharpen your vocabulary and pattern recognition skills
- Faster solves when it works — you're directly testing potential answers, so lucky hits come sooner
When Hard Mode Hurts
Hard Mode has a well-known weakness: letter traps. Consider words ending in -IGHT (LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT, WIGHT). If you guess LIGHT and get ⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩, you're locked into _IGHT words. In Hard Mode, you have to guess them one by one — potentially 6+ guesses. In Normal Mode, you could guess SWORN to test S, W, O, R, N and eliminate most possibilities at once.
Hard Mode Strategy Tips
- Start with maximum coverage — use high-entropy openers like CRANE or SLATE that give the most information
- Watch for letter traps early — if you see a pattern with many possibilities (e.g., _OUND, _IGHT, _ATCH), try to differentiate before locking in
- Use Wordle Analyzer's Hard Mode Solver — our dedicated Hard Mode Solver only suggests words that satisfy all constraints from previous guesses
- Prioritize position information — turning a yellow into a green is more valuable in Hard Mode since it locks that position for all future guesses
How Wordle Analyzer Helps
Wordle Analyzer includes a dedicated Hard Mode Solver that:
- Automatically filters out words that violate Hard Mode constraints
- Ranks remaining valid words by entropy, frequency, and composite score
- Shows you exactly which letters are locked (green) and required (yellow)
- Works instantly in your browser — no sign-up needed
You can also toggle Hard Mode directly in the main Wordle Analyzer tool using the toggle switch next to the guess grid.
